At Wednesday’s Santa Rosa farmers market, I picked up these gorgeous sun gold tomatoes. I usually go for heirloom varieties, and these are a hybrid, but in my opinion, sun golds are the sweetest and most flavorful cherry tomatoes. They are like candy and we go through at least one or two baskets a week at the peak of the season. I can’t help but pop a few in my mouth every time I pass them in the kitchen.
One summer I gave my cousin’s toddler one of these beauties and watched him closely for his reaction (and to make sure he didn’t choke on it). He sucked on the tomato for a few minutes, finally popped it and looked a little startled. Then, he was so pleased, that for the rest of the afternoon, he just HAD to have one in his mouth, and one in each of his little hands at all times. Several farms sell sun golds at the market, but this week we bought them from Crescent Moon Farm. They invited me to take a tour of their not-quite-one-acre farm, and I hope to take them up on their offer.
